Re: False positives - troubleshooting Windows Defender

False positives

False positives are a common problem for small publishers. Anti-viruses recognize chunks of code (e.g. file downloads) as potentially malicious, or even find some parts of code to be identical to a part of virus code, for instance the code responsible for connecting to a server. Tibiantis has a built-in auto-update feature which allows the client to connect to the server and check whether an update is available, and—if so—to download the latest files. This feature causes the anti-virus programs to misclassify the client as a trojan and, as a result, block it or move it to quarantine, thus making playing impossible. We always report any such misdetection to the developers of the anti-virus and await to be whitelisted—which can take few hours or a few weeks.

Follow the guide below to see how to add our client to the exceptions in the most popular anti-virus, Windows Defender. Thanks to this, if false positives happen again, you will be able to play without any problems.

1. Windows Defender (Windows 10 and Windows 11)
Step 1: Open Windows Security

Click the magnifying glass icon on the taskbar and type "Windows Security."
Select the "Windows Security" app from the search results.

Step 2: Go to Virus & Threat Protection settings

In the "Windows Security" window, click on "Virus & threat protection" in the left panel.

Step 3: Manage Virus & Threat Protection settings

Scroll down and click on "Manage settings" under the "Virus & threat protection settings" section.

Step 4: Add an exclusion

Scroll down to the "Exclusions" section and click on "Add or remove exclusions".
Click the "Add an exclusion" button and choose "Folder" from the dropdown menu.
Browse your files to find the folder containing the Tibiantis client, and select it.
After selecting the Tibiantis client folder, click "Select Folder." The folder will be added to the exclusions list.

Known Issues
Sometimes access to the Defender's settings is impossible due to a bug in some Windows 11 builds. Here is a fix from Microsoft:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_11-security/windows-security-stuck-on-black-screen-after/347ae039-5439-405d-83e1-fbfabbe23712

If you can't download the client because your browser instantly blocks it, you need to disable the Defender first.
Go to settings (step 3) and untick every option there. Then, download the client, extract it, and add whole folder to exclusions as shown in step 4.

Make sure the selected folder contains all of the Tibiantis client files. If it does not, or if you've followed all steps and Tibiantis still won't run, please download the client again!

If you encounter any other problems, check your anti-virus settings again or post your issue in this topic.
