Re: Guide by Dratini

Just for someone to correct me if im wrong.

Using this formula for a Knight equiped with demon shield, 80 shielding, fighting with full attack will block up to 93.555(93 rounded down) dmg?

In the same time using Giant sword (def 22) with same skill (80 sword fighting) using balanced stance will block up to 98 dmg? In same time GS dealing basically same damage as full attack fire axe (with both skilled the same).

Great guide! Thanks for that.

Fire axe with demon shield on full attack have 45/21 stats. Giant sword on balance has 46/22. So yes, it's pretty close (assuming the same melee and shielding skill).

So it would be fair to say that diffrence between F Axe + Demon shield vs GS are very marginal (adds up in long run for sure) and main advantage really comes in skilling itself. Advancing just in sword fighting instead of axe + shielding makes it just that much more easy.

In this example yes, but don't forget you're comparing full attack to balance. In both cases you can switch to the other stances as well. E.g. with a giant sword you can turn to full attack for even more damage, but with a shield you can turn to full defense and block most of the incoming damage which you won't be able to do with a giant sword. Worth to note, that when you're not attacking (no target) you effectvely always have full defense regardless of the stance setting.

Also note that on offensive mode demon shield (def:35) and vampire shield (def:34) both have def:21 so the upgrade is not worth much for knights.

Re: Guide by Dratini

compare balance to balanced

carry both 1 handed, 2 handed and shield
each has purpose and strategy
no need to limit your options

advantage from "only sword" comes from sov

if there wasn't sov no one would consider
depending on how much time it takes to get sov,
u can call that advantage rather marginal aswell

Balance to balance? Just take stats as they are. No multiplication or rounding needed.

Carrying shield and 2h weapon gives you more options sure, but how often do you want defensive mode on solo hunt?

If there was no SoV or SCA players would likely choose sword still as Giant Sword is better than Fire Axe or Dragon Lance in all but shield defensive mode scenario. You can train shield only 20% of total time and still have decent skill. Higher level/ better skill/ harder monsters make it better to maximise damage. In this case Giant Sword is better than Dragon Lance because of 1 attack vs 6 def.

excuse my math below, what i mean is this:
in the above example, comparing fire axe/demon shield (38/35) to giant sword (46/22) with skills (80/80),
this thread ignores the quality of a balanced stance using weapon + shield, to grind a knight at decent exp/loot ratio

offensive     201/93          244/58
balanced     168/155        204/98

defensive    100/279        122/176

the quality of gs on balanced is remarkable and outstanding
yet less efficient vs. physically stronger creatures, which remain a perfect grind and blocker's choice favorite
imo the point is to waste less uh, profit more loot and hunt longer without refill
to trade this off for a few quick attack points doesn't seem at all worth it
